AMERICAN GOLD PLATING EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES

Gold Plating BY PICTURES

The idea of Gold Plating BY PICTURES is to give you picture images of the gold plating process so you can understand the steps in Gold Plating. This page will give you a simple set of picture images that will give you a working idea of how a Brush Type Gold Plating system works. Because of all of the images on this page, it will take a long time to load. It could take 2 minutes to get to all images.

PLEASE NOTE: We provide the detailed 100 page Gold Plating Manual and the QUICK START GUIDE to Gold Plating, with our Gold Plating equipment. There is important information contained within the Gold Plating Manual and the QUICK START GUIDE to Gold Plating. This group of pictures is not a replacement for the Gold Plating Manual or a replacement for the QUICK START GUIDE to Gold Plating. We assume no liability in any way whatsoever by offering this basic group of images. And by viewing and or printing these images, you accept the limitation of our liability and agree that before you might attempt to Gold Plate in any way whatsoever, you will read and comprehend the appropriate manual for the system you get.

PLEASE NOTE: In the following pictures, you will see hands working over a "drain pan." If this were an actual Gold Plating Job, the operator would have gloves on, as well as holding the item in their gloved hands. It IS NOT necessary, or a benefit for you to have a stainless steel grounding tray in your drain pan. This increases your cost without offering you a benefit.

24K Gold Plating on Cars, Trucks, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV'S) and Vans is a DRESS UP Accessory.

Consumer also Gold Plate other items like Guns, Jewelry, and similar decorative items.

To help our customers in learning how to Gold Plate, we provide a detailed 100 page Gold Plating Manual that covers a wide variety of topics about Gold Plating. Plus we provide a QUICK START GUIDE to Gold Plating.

The first Gold Plating photo image shows the Gold Plating Family Photo. The Gold Plating Family Photo shows off the standard Gold Plating Equipment package which contains everything you need (including Gold Plating chemicals) to get you started in Gold Plating.

The 30 AMP MOBILE Gold Plating Equipment & Supplies family photo represents all of the items currently listed in the Gold Plating equipment packing list shown on another page in our large informational WEB SITE on Gold Plating.

The items shown above are the basic quantities of items you will need to do a quality Gold Plating job. Most of the replacement supplies are available locally once you know what you need to have to do the Gold Plating work.

The 30 AMP Power Supply AUTOMATICALLY ADJUST to the amounts of AMPS necessary in the separate steps of the Gold Plating process.

To set up your Power Supply it is a simple matter of plugging the RED wire into the RED power output and the BLACK wire into the black power ground.

RED is POSITIVE and BLACK is NEGATIVE.

This simple and easy to do connection establishes a simple color-code for you.

POSITIVE FLOWS TO NEGATIVE.

POSITIVE ALWAYS FLOWS TO NEGATIVE.

If you have had a chance to visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, you will already know that we suggest the most common problem in mobile "brush type" Gold Plating is not stripping the chrome enough, or not removing all of the chrome. The 30 AMP mobile Gold Plating System has enough amps to do the work and AUTOMATICALLY adjusts to the amount of amps necessary in the different steps of the Gold Plating process.

Used properly, the three step - three chemical system we provide will not have problems in stripping the chrome, activating the nickel or depositing and molecularly bonding the 24K Gold to the exposed and activated nickel.

Our experience shows this 3-step process is the best for overall durability and long wearing gold.

The 3-step system is the same process used by tank platers doing gold plating for years.

The VOLTAGE ADJUSTMENT is AUTOMATIC with the 30 AMP Power Supply.

RED is ELECTRICALLY POSITIVE while BLACK is ELECTRICALLY NEGATIVE. Using the two wire method for Gold Plating makes it simple.

With this simple two wire system, POSITIVE (RED) always flows to NEGATIVE (BLACK).

After cleaning the piece you are going to work to gold plate, the first step is stripping the chrome.

PLEASE NOTE: The high grade stainless steel we use for our stainless steel ELECTRODE HANDLES and stainless steel ELECTRODES are extremely durable. When you accidentally drop them or when they get rough handling while in transit. The stainless steel electrodes do not break down during the normal plating process or cause any problems or contamination n the Gold Plating process.

For the purpose of this Web Site Page, we did the photo's INSIDE a building and worked with the Cadillac Script in the drain pan.

When you do the Gold Plating work, you will almost always do the Gold Plating work while the scripts are on the vehicle.

NOTE: Replacing DOUBLE STICK Automotive Grade  tape backings on removed scripts can be a problem. The BEST RESULTS come from doing the Gold Plating work with the scripts on the vehicle.

The Gold Plating process we use for converting a CHROME SCRIPT to a GOLD SCRIPT is generally referred to as a 3 step system, although there are more than three actual steps when you consider you may have to clean the script first and so on.

Step 1 - STRIP THE CHROME, which exposes the layer of nickel below the chrome.

Step 2 - ACTIVATE THE NICKEL, which gets the nickel ready for the gold.

Step 3 - DEPOSIT & MOLECULARLY BOND 24K Gold to the exposed and activated nickel.

If you are attempting to Gold Plate items that are not already CHROME PLATED, we can help you too. The process may require added chemicals and steps. If you have questions on this, contact us so we can help you.

5 to 7 Minutes to Gold Plate the Average Script / Emblem right on the vehicle.

The images below show working with the Gold Plating System in a drain pan.

You will see that gold plating small items over a drain pan is done by hand.

Since you will do the work by hand, a grounding tray is an added expense.

We do not include items that increase your cost without value to you.

STEP 1 - STRIPPING THE CHROME

To take the chrome off of a part, you make the part ELECTRICALLY POSITIVE and the chrome stripper chemical ELECTRICALLY NEGATIVE. When you apply power, the chrome stripper electro chemically (meaning using electricity and chemicals) strips off the chrome.

We do not recommend, and specifically suggest against using an alligator clip to connect to a script/emblem. The reason is simple. In actual use, Gold Platers do not move the alligator clips after they attach them. In that case, you can, and occasionally will, run to much electricity through one spot which can cause problems in plating, as well as causing problems of not stripping the chrome in the spot where the alligator clip is connected. The metal BANANA CLIPS work fine.

As the chrome comes off of the script, the synthetic anode wrap turns yellow. The yellow color is the chrome chemical coming off of the script/emblem.

The TRIGGER SPRAY BOTTLE with distilled water is used to RINSE OFF the script/emblem in between the steps. Since water beads on chrome, you can do a check to be sure you have removed all of the chrome from the script/emblem.

In the next image, we show the color-coded BLACK lead wire connected to the black output of the 35 amp PYRAMID Gold Series Power Supply and into the color-coded BLACK solid stainless steel PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with a synthetic anode wrap on the anode.

With the color-code RED banana clip touching the script, we made the part we are working on ELECTRICALLY POSITIVE. The chemical is ELECTRICALLY NEGATIVE because we want the chemicals and the chrome plating to FLOW OFF of the part and onto the synthetic anode wrap.

NOTE: When working with chemicals, always wear protective items, such as a chemical respirator and chemical goggles and gloves, all are provided in your start up equipment package.

When you are stripping the chrome, your hands will hold the color-coded BLACK PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with the synthetic wrap as shown below.

Touch the part with the RED lead.

The image shown above shows shows the color-code RED banana plug touching the Cadillac script. This makes the Cadillac script electrically positive. Touching the color-coded BLACK PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with the synthetic wrap wet with the chrome stripper solution, completes the low voltage electrical circuit and in an ELECTRO CHEMICAL action, strips the chrome from the script. Stripping off the chrome exposes a layer of nickel. After stripping off the chrome, and rinsing the part with distilled water, you check to be sure you got all of the chrome off of the piece.

STEP 2 - ACTIVATING THE NICKEL

In the next step you activate the nickel you exposed when you stripped off the chrome. In the next image, we show the color-coded RED lead wire connected to the red output of the 35 amp PYRAMID Gold Series Power Supply and into the color-coded RED solid stainless steel PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with a synthetic anode wrap on the anode.

  • In removing the chrome, you made the piece positive and the chemical negative so the chemical can make the chrome flow off of the piece.
  • In nickel activating, you make the piece electrically negative and the chemical positive so the chemical flows to the piece you are working on.

This simple and easy to do step of switching from a chemical on a color-code BLACK ELECTRODE HANDLE to a chemical on a color-coded RED ELECTRODE HANDLE switches the direction of electrical flow.

POSITIVE still goes to NEGATIVE, POSITIVE ALWAYS FLOWS TO NEGATIVE. No switches to change or be concerned about. The entire operation is color-coded.

With the color-code BLACK banana clip touching the script, we made the parts we are working on ELECTRICALLY NEGATIVE. The chemical is ELECTRICALLY POSITIVE because we want the nickel activating chemicals to FLOW ONTO the part.

When you are activating the nickel, your hands will hold the color-coded RED PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with the synthetic wrap as shown below.

nickelactivatinghands.JPG (47935 bytes)

Touch the part with the BLACK lead.

The image shown above shows shows the color-code BLACK banana plug touching the Cadillac script. This makes the Cadillac script electrically negative. Touching the color-coded RED PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with the synthetic wrap wet with the nickel activator solution, completes the low voltage electrical circuit and in the ELECTRO CHEMICAL action, activated the exposed nickel. After activating the nickel, and thoroughly rinsing the part with distilled water, you are ready to move to the next step.

We always rinse very thoroughly between the Nickel Activating and the Gold Plating. The reason is very important.

The nickel activator can be, and commonly is, an ACID based formula.

Mixing an ACID with the small amount of CYANIDE in the Gold Plating solution can release HYDROGEN CYANIDE GAS.

NOTE: Cyanide based Gold provides a hard long lasting gold.

STEP 3 - DEPOSITING & MOLECULARLY BONDING THE 24K GOLD

In the next step you deposit and molecularly bond 24K Gold to the exposed and activated nickel. In the next image, we show the color-coded RED lead wire connected to the red output of the 35 amp PYRAMID Gold Series Power Supply and into the color-coded YELLOW WITH RED BAND solid stainless steel PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with a synthetic anode wrap on the anode.

With the color-code BLACK banana clip touching the script, we made the parts we are working on ELECTRICALLY NEGATIVE. The chemical is ELECTRICALLY POSITIVE because we want the 24K Gold Plating chemicals to FLOW ONTO the part.

When you are depositing and molecularly bonding the 24K Gold to the exposed and activated nickel, your hands will hold the color-coded YELLOW WITH RED BAND PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with the synthetic wrap as shown below.

The image shown above shows the color-code BLACK banana plug touching the Cadillac script. This makes the Cadillac script electrically negative. Touching the color-coded YELLOW WITH RED BAND PLATING ELECTRODE HANDLE and ELECTRODE with the synthetic wrap wet with the gold plating solution, completes the low voltage electrical circuit and in the ELECTRO CHEMICAL action, deposits and molecularly bonds the 24K gold to the exposed and activated nickel. The PURPLE COLORED Gold Plating solution flows onto the exposed and activated nickel turning a brilliant 24K Gold.

From this point, you can do the final checks as outlined in the Detailed Gold Plating Manual we provide with each system and then move onto the next script on the vehicle.
