Can I deposit 24 K Gold
directly onto CHROME?
It depends on the gold.
Commonly used Gold
Plating Solutions within what we can the Automotive Brush Plating Industry will not stick
to chrome.
The so-called ONE STEP
GOLD PLATING SOLUTIONS can stick to gold by using an acid base.
A 24K gold with an acid
base, uses the ACID to work with other simple chrome cleaners to etch the surface so
the gold will stick to the etched chrome. However, in the process of etching the CHROME so
the gold will stick, it typically dulls the surface of the chrome.
Although not exactly a
fair comparison, figure you are going to paint a piece and you sand the surface to get it
ready for the coat of paint. The result is you will have dulled the initial finish because
you sanded it.
To compensate for this in
Gold Plating Solutions, it is not uncommon to mix an amount of nickel in with the gold
plating solution so you deposit nickel along with the gold on the dulled piece.
Remember, NICKEL is a
METAL similar to GOLD being a METAL.
24K gold is PURE GOLD and
it is soft. If we were to mix in some NICKEL, we would change the amount of METAL in the
mixture to be GOLD and SOMETHING
ELSE. In this instance, NICKEL.
Since 24K gold is
considered 100% PURE GOLD, each time you dilute the amount of gold metal with another
metal, you drop the K. 12K gold is 1/2 gold and 1/2 something
else!
With our BEST GRADE of gold
plating solution, we put so much REAL GOLD into the solution that it will stick
to the chrome surface for a while. However, without properly stripping the
chrome, exposing the nickel and then activating the nickel and depositing the
24K gold to the exposed and activated nickel you do not get a top quality
durable gold plating job.
