Can I Gold Plate BATHROOM FIXTURES?

YES, our 25 amp, 30 amp and our 35 amp gold plating systems can Gold Plate CHROME BATHROOM FIXTURES. We would suggest the 30 amp system over the 25 amp or 35 amp system because the 30 amps help in the chrome stripping process and the light weight of the 30 amp system is a plus.

We get asked this question quite often. The question typically comes from people who are looking into Gold Plating as a way of making money. The idea of finding ways to make money sounds good. Every home has at least a kitchen and a bath room so there are two potential sales per home, times the number of houses in any given town shows, a large number of potential sales.

Defining REAL POTENTIAL as opposed to what is usually called "BLUE SKY" is a challenge.

BLUE SKY is a term I learned many years ago, it is a big BLUE SKY, which implies a lot of untapped opportunity but hard to sell to.

Gold Plating is a way of showing off. It is a display of wealth.

On average, how many people see the inside of where you live? Probably very few.

On average, how many people will see the vehicle you drive? Probably quite a lot.

Does your bathroom or your vehicle give you a better chance of showing off Gold Plating? Clearly, your vehicle offers the best chance to be seen.

Of the model homes that you have personally been in, and have confirmation from the builder, how many show off 24 K Gold Plated faucets? How many have polished brass? You need to know.

The next thing to check is the plumbing department of a Hardware Store or a Home Decorating location. See what they offer in what color and then you will get a better idea. Polished brass with a protective coating sure looks good. It is not particularly expensive either.

This is not to say that you would never get a sale to gold plate faucets, it is to point you in the direction of seeing what is really out there and to define the realistic potential.

In simple terms;

If you live in an area where almost everyone wants gold plated bathroom fixtures, you will be able to do with work with our Gold Plating System.

If the area you live in does not have a lot of gold plated bathroom fixtures, the Gold Plating System we offer will be able to do gold plating of bathroom fixtures when, or if, you ever find the work of gold plating bathroom fixtures.

As a side note, even if you do not find plumbing work, our 35 amp gold plating system will make you money in other gold plating work, as in gold plating the assorted scripts and emblems on vehicles.

Between jobs of gold plating bathroom fixtures, if you find that work, you will make real NOW MONEY gold plating the assorted scripts and emblems on vehicles. This makes it a WIN - WIN - WIN deal for you.

There is a LIMITED SALES POTENTIAL to do in-the-home Gold Plating on Bathroom Fixtures. Finding the in-the-home Gold Plating work is perhaps one of the hardest tasks.

Reports from customers continue to say that if they did not do Gold Plating on Cars, Sport Utility Vehicles, Trucks and or Vans, they would not make much real money.

Just because you can do the work, does not mean it is smart to do the work. Please read on.

Some people have found assorted "niche markets" like doing bathroom fixtures.

Others have told us there is NO REAL POTENTIAL IN GOLD PLATING BATHROOM FIXTURES.

Again, check out Plumbing Stores, Hardware Stores and Home Fixture Stores in your local area. Study your real market potential by being informed before you make a purchase.

We STRONGLY suggest you investigate the REAL POTENTIAL in your area of "niche markets" with Gold Plating before you buy any machine to do the work.

The ability to do the work, and the practical applications of the work are different. That translates real easy. YES, as I said above, you can do the work of gold plating bathroom fixtures with our systems, although it will not bring you a lot of business and it will bring you a lot of problems.

In the August 1997 issue of Popular Science, on page 47, Popular Science had a highlighted section on PLUMBING. They wrote;

"BRASS BATHROOM FIXTURES look elegant - until years of use turn them from dashing to dull. Now, to give polished brass the durability of chrome, faucet manufacturers have developed protective, corrosion-resistant coatings."

The Popular Science article goes on to talk about Delta Faucet's Brilliance and Moen's Lifeshine coated-products that are available now. They add that Kohler plans to introduce a similar finish soon.

The scope and nature of the article points out the importance of providing a PROTECTIVE FINISH that will RESIST the rigors of cleaning the fixtures take.

The Popular Science article continues by explaining,

"We subjected both companies' products to a set of tests - and they both lived up to promises. Using an abrasive powder, a clog-removing liquid, a lime removing liquid, and a steel wool pad, we were unable to damage the surface of either faucet during simulated cleaning. That doesn't mean the faucets are damage-proof, of course: We did manage to scratch one with the tip of a ball point pen."

The point of bringing this up to you is simple. Even the manufacturers of the plumbing fixtures are working to improve the durability of the FACTORY FINISHES on their products. Clearly, no gold plating job I know of would stand up to the types of abuse the Popular Science testing team did on the special treatment of the faucets.

In light of seeing this information (you can probably go to the local Library and get a copy of the August 1997 issue of Popular Science, the article was on page 47) do you really want to gold plate plumbing fixtures?

Knowing the information contained in the Popular Science article, should we work to sell you a gold plating system to do gold plating work on plumbing fixtures?

To do a decent job of gold plating in the plumbing industry, take a look at the process currently developed for the purpose.

High polished BRASS gives off a bright yellow finish, like GOLD. The problem that plagued the plumbing fixture industry was the question of durability. Housewives, and others who clean the bathroom, commonly scrub the surface with a variety of products. These would include a soft scrubbing product as well as harsh abrasive cleaners.

Currently, there are a number of products being marketed in the plumbing fixture industry with a "LIFETIME" brass finish. These are from several large Kitchen & Bath and Architectural Hardware OEM's.

This "LIFETIME" brass finish is actually Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). Also known as Ion Plating, PVD is a high vacuum process in which metals are ionized and deposited along with reactive gases to form a very hard, very thin metal compounds.

Applied over chrome plated brass or zinc (or directly over polished stainless), PVD applied ZrN provides;

  1. Extreme Corrosion Resistance - it does not need an organic top coat and will not tarnish or corrode.

  2. True Color Replication - it is the color of polished brass, it can easily be turned to a specific brass shade (in volume operations) and is replicated with accuracy between cycles.

  3. Extreme Abrasion Resistance - it will not scratch off under aggressive abrasive wear.

  4. Excellent Chemical Resistance - it successfully resists attack from most chemicals.

It is for these reasons, and more, that the Kitchen & Bath and Architectural Hardware Community is quickly moving to PVD processing instead of other more problematic life enhancing coatings that purport to yield lifetime performance but fail in one or more of the items listed above.

The result of this is simple. The Kitchen & Bath and Architectural Hardware Community already realizes there is a problem of durability of special coatings on assorted plumbing fixtures. Further, they know GOLD is a soft coating to start with, even if it is deposited as a VERY HARD SURFACE. This is why they are moving to Physical Vapor Repositioning (PVD) processing.

It is obviously not practical for you to attempt to PVD processing.

During the 1998 NATIONAL HARDWARE SHOW in CHICAGO, Illinois, I visited a number of plumbing fixture booths. Although several of the people in the booths had a problem pronouncing Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) they all knew about it. The comments were simple, the companies I visited were all offering Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process and were equally sure any company providing plumbing fixtures either have the process of will be going to the same process very soon.

The aspect of doing the Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process on the manufacturers chrome finish is still not conclusive.

This means Gold Plating of existing chrome plumbing fixtures is possible.

This also puts into question the potential of gold plating NEW chrome plumbing fixtures.

The point that you can do Gold Plating of chrome plumbing fixtures today does not address the long term durability of the finish. From a durability standpoint, the gold will wear off while the polished brass fixture with a Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish over the brass will last and last.

Basically, it is not practical to expect to make a lot of money, or to develop a business by Gold Plating chrome bathroom fixtures. And, before you purchase ANY GOLD PLATING MACHINE from ANY GOLD PLATING MACHINE SUPPLIER, based on the idea that you can make money and or go into a business of doing gold plating on plumbing fixtures, be sure to INVESTIGATE the real sales potential.

Although we are not selling a PVD system, of any type, we do have information on it if you need to have a special piece processed. This is clearly one of the NOVELTY TYPE APPLICATIONS, and not anything you should spend any time on.

As a special note, we can get you a chemical that you can use to remove the Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish over the brass. However, we would not want to do that because there is no sense in getting into a warranty questi0on and I expect the manufacturer of the bathroom fixtures would take the position that the person who removed the Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish on the bathroom fixture is responsible for the warranty problems with the bathroom fixtures.

The place to make money is the potential to turn the chrome scripts and emblems on peoples vehicles to GOLD, and we have a great gold plating system to do that work.
