CAN YOU GOLD PLATE AT 17 VOLTS?

This is almost a TRICK QUESTION because even a correct answer can be misleading.

YES, you can gold plate at 17 volts. However, years of experience in both TANK and BRUSH type Gold Plating have shown that 12 volts to 13.8 volts is ideal. In some instances, Gold Plating with 6 volts is desirable.

During the 2000 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, a new company on the market was offering a gold plating system that claimed they offered 30 volts. They also had a very low price on their gold which leads us to believe they are using a gold plating solution with little gold in it and are attempting to drive a lot of volts through it to make it plate out the low amount of gold in their gold plating solution.

Although you will commonly find that you will do an excellent job of gold plating at 12 volts providing you have a good quality gold plating system and a gold plating solution with enough gold in the solution. We commonly find excellent plating results at 12 volts to 13.8 volts and even at 6 volts, even on very small and delicate items.

If you are finding that you need to, or are setting your power supply to 17 volts to do any of the steps in gold plating, it sounds as if you are attempting to push power through corroded lines. We have a FAQ on this and expect to have images of corroded electrical wires from a Gold Plater on the Web Site soon.

You can FIX the problem of corroded electrical wires by a simple process which we explain. To learn how, check our FAQ CLICK HERE.

Or, perhaps there is not enough gold in the solution you are attempting to use and the increased amount of voltage is one attempt to compensate for this.

In Gold Plating what matters is the AMPS.

The 30 AMP Mobile Type Gold Plating System automatically adjusts for the AMPS necessary in each step of the gold plating process.

The PYRAMID PS26KX and PS36KX automatically adjust the amperage you need for the plating process you are in too.

The gold we provide should plate just fine at 6 volts on very small pieces and 12 volts or 13.8 volts on everything else.

We caution you against using high voltage since it can cause some problems. Higher volts can cause additional heat to pass through the piece you are working on. The added heat can damage a small, thin, and or delicate part.

We strongly recommend 12 volts or 13.8 volts as a logical starting point.

On automotive items, INCLUDING many large pieces like BUMPERS, 12 volts works just fine.

If you are into delicate and or thin items, say FISH HOOKS or thin metal, we need to talk before you make your buying decision since we will want to help you get the right unit. We have several other power supplies available for really small items depending on what you need, including ANALOG units with precise voltage and amperage adjustments for special applications, with ranges from 0 to 5 AMPS and 0 to 30 VOLTS DC.

However, from a practical standpoint, working to do Gold Plating on common automotive items, 12 volts or 13.8 volts is the best overall average.
