Which is BEST, steel, stainless steel or graphite for plating?

Plain steel can rust. Anyone looking at older vehicles, or any exposed steel can tell this.

High quality Stainless Steel does not rust.

Graphite does not rust either.

TITANIUM components are commonly used in TANK TYPE GOLD PLATING, the GOLD PLATING TANK, to cut out any iron deposits from getting into the gold tank. The main difference is the type of work. In a tank system, you are constantly reusing the same chemicals. This is why tank platers use stainless steel components in some tanks and titanium components in some tanks, plus  filters and agitators to keep their tanks reasonably clean and free of contaminants.

TANK PLATING is one method which requires special considerations. As long as you are doing what is generally refereed to as BRUSH PLATING, you function under a different set of factors.

When you look at the assorted plating wands, pens, and so on, used in mobile / brush type Gold Plating you will see an assortment of claims.

Our feeling is simple.

  1. Stainless Steel is an ideal conductor of electricity. We use it in portions of our tank type gold plating system, as many others do.

  2. Stainless Steel rod is extremely durable.

  3. Stainless Steel is very easy to clean, in regular water or even in HOT SOAPY WATER, and rinses clean too!

The nature of mobile / brush type Gold Plating differs substantially from the TANK PLATING system.

  • In a TANK PLATING SYSTEM, the same chemicals are used over and over again. During the process, additional chemicals must be added. however, the point is the fact, in a TANK SYSTEM, you can have an accumulation of contaminants, over time, in the chemical tanks. To combat this, an assortment of filters are used, along with titanium components in the Gold Plating Tank.

  • In a MOBILE / BRUSH TYPE SYSTEM, the chemicals are, basically consumed in the process, rather than bringing in any DRAG OUT of chemicals from one tank to another, or from an accumulation of impurities. The extremely small amount of chemicals in the JOB SITE CONTAINERS makes contamination problems a far smaller concern. And, in the unlikely event you do contaminate the chemicals in the JOB SITE CONTAINERS, it would not contaminate your storage containers.

  • To a certain point, the IRON in steel gives a more YELLOW COLOR to the Gold. Many people want the bright yellow color. So, iron may be a plus. In any event, not enough iron comes out of the stainless steel during any brush plating session, or sessions, to contaminate anything. You are always adding more gold, and occasionally, you have to replace the bootie (cloth electrode cover) so if there were any impurities that accumulated, you would automatically remove them.

We provide TOP QUALITY STAINLESS STEEL wands and plating pens. You can find images of them on our order blank. We give a lifetime warranty (which does not cover loss) on them. If we could find a better material, we would use it.

You simply can not imagine how difficult it is to drill STAINLESS STEEL ROD or to tap the holes in the rods. However, you will see the quality of the piece as soon as you see one.

If a TITANIUM gold plating electrode made for a better plating job in mobile / brush plating, we could easily get them for you. However, no scientific evidence exists to show any contamination from quality materials, such as we provide.
